Epping is a market town and civil parish in the Epping Forest District of Essex, England. Part of the metropolitan and urban area of London, it is 17 miles (30 km) north-east of Charing Cross. It is surrounded by the northern end of Epping Forest, and on a ridge of land between the River Roding and River Lea valleys. Epping High Street is home to many shops, beauty salons, cafes, restaurants, and bars, proving to be one of the more accommodating High Streets in West Essex.

Epping Forest

Epping Forest is one of the man attractions of Epping. Epping Forest is of national and international conservation importance and home to over 50,000 ancient pollard trees and 100 lakes and ponds. The forest is free to visit and is open 365 days of the year. When Queen Victoria visited Chingford on 6 May 1882 she declared “It gives me the greatest satisfaction to dedicate this beautiful forest to the use and enjoyment of my people for all time” and it thus became “The People’s Forest”. The City of London Corporation still manages Epping Forest in strict conformity with the Epping Forest Act.

Epping market attracts shoppers from surrounding villages and towns every Monday. A prominent building in Epping is the District Council’s office with its clock tower, designed to bring balance to the High Street with the old Gothic Revival water tower at the southern end, built in 1872, and St John’s Church tower in the centre. The centre of Epping on and around the High Street is a designated conservation area. Epping also serves as the grounds for St Margaret’s Hospital, along with a selection of Chiropodists, Orthodontists, Opticians and Pharmacy’s. Epping High Street is home to many shops, beauty salons, cafes, restaurants, and bars, proving to be one of the more accommodating High Streets in West Essex.

Travel

Epping is situated just a short drive from the start of the M25 in Waltham Abbey. The M11 starts in South Woodford in northeast London, meeting the M25 Motorway at junction 6.

Stansted airport is a short drive via the M11 with Luton airport is also relatively close, being approximately a hour away with Gatwick approximately an hour and 20 minute drive.
